HalalTrace
The Problem
Malaysian Muslim consumers check halal logos obsessively — but how do they know the logo is real? JAKIM's halal certification database exists but is not consumer-friendly: no mobile app, no barcode scan, no real-time verification, no expiry date alerts. Counterfeit halal logos appear on imported products, home-based food businesses, and even some restaurant chains. In 2025, JAKIM reported 120+ cases of fake halal logos. For the 63% Muslim majority, this is a trust crisis. Consumers want to scan a product and instantly know: is this halal certified, by which body, and is the cert still valid? Currently impossible without visiting JAKIM's desktop portal.
The Solution
HalalTrace is a consumer mobile app that instantly verifies halal certification via barcode scan. Scan any product barcode → app queries JAKIM/JAIN/foreign halal certifier databases → shows: certification status (valid/expired/fake), certifying body, expiry date, product name as registered, and manufacturer details. 'Halal Score' for restaurants based on JAKIM certification + user reports + inspection history. Community reporting: flag suspicious products for verification. Ingredient analyzer: scan ingredients list for doubtful items (E-numbers, gelatin source, emulsifiers). Free for consumers. B2B API for e-commerce platforms and food delivery apps (RM500/mo).
Target Market
20M+ Malaysian Muslim consumers + 8,500+ JAKIM-certified premises + growing halal export industry (RM52B annually)
Revenue Model
Free for consumers. B2B API: RM500/mo (Shopee/Lazada/food delivery apps embed halal verification). Certified business dashboard RM99/mo (manage listing, respond to consumer queries, display digital halal badge). Halal certification consultancy referral commission 10%.
4-Week Validation Plan
- Week1: Interview 20 Malaysian Muslim consumers about their halal verification habits and trust concerns.
- Week2: Build barcode scanner prototype with access to JAKIM public database. Test scanning 200 common supermarket products.
- Week3: Recruit 200 users via Muslim consumer Facebook groups. Measure: scans per user per week, fake logo detections, user trust improvement.
- Week4: Analyze: >5 scans/user/week AND >80% trust improvement reported = commit; <2 scans/user/week = pivot to halal restaurant directory.
